Nollywood By Pieter Hugo 1

Prestel Publishing brings us Nollywood by Pieter Hugo, a photography book documenting the Nigerian film industry. The world’s 3rd largest, Nigeria’s film industry is often misunderstood by those who’ve never seen it, a situation that Nollywood hopes to change. Photographer Pieter Hugo shows us tableaus from Nigerian cinema, featuring local actors dealing with familiar themes of war, crime, poverty, and tragedy. A wonderful look at one of the most culturally rich nations in the world.

Woodwork (2)

“Wally may have been our most troubled artist… I’m not suggesting any connection, but he may have been our most brilliant.”

- EC Comics Publisher William Gaines

It could have been the constant headaches. Alcoholism, perhaps. Kidney failure, a stroke, the loss of vision in one eye… nevertheless, three self-inflicted gunshots in 1981 ended the life and career of heralded cartoonist, Wallace Wood.

Fast forward almost 30 years later and the art and influence that Wood left sketched into the minds of illustrators and cartoonists alike is unparalleled. The man inspired a generation of underground artists including luminaries Robert Crumb, Robert Williams and Art Spiegelman, left a major impact on graphically-charged movie posters, and now finds tribute in the world of street fashion.

New brand Woodwork has (legally – we swear) appropriated some of the more infamous, notorious works of Wood’s twisted, pained brilliance for a line of killer tees, resulting in vaguely familiar, yet never-seen-before prints that you may spend more time staring at than actually wearing. Check ‘em out:

Stay tuned for more madness from Woodwork in the coming weeks and seasons; with a career that spanned nearly four decades, there is enough material produced by Wood to make up for all of those bullshit, embarrassing Ed Hardy and Von Dutch garments tucked into the back corner of your closet.

Today is not such a hot day for fans of beautiful gravure idols. First that news that idol Natsume Sano has decided to call it quits, and then I see over at Danny Choo that print mag Sabra (similar to Maxim here in the states) has announced after ten years of publication that they will be switching to a web-only strategy. According to Sabra, the decision was made based on having to "radically alter" their strategy due to the current publishing and web enviroment.

Danny Choo also pointed out the idea that 2D mags sell better (all of the Amazon Japan top sellers in the category are 2D). While I hate to think that could be true, I know there's plenty of evidence that some otaku consider the 2D idol to be a safer and more pleasurable object to focus their desires on. Would you prefer your idol crushes to be real people or anime characters, and why?
